Daphne-Velma Kiss and Gay Fred Joke Cut From ‘Scooby-Doo’ Movie

Sarah Michelle Gellar claimed during a recent appearance on "Watch What Happens Live" that a "steamy" gay kiss between her character Daphne and Linda Cardellini's Velma was filmed for but omitted from the 2002 live-action "Scooby Doo" movie. Both Matthew Lillard (Shaggy) and Freddie Prinze Jr. (Fred) were featured in the picture. Gellar claimed that the film's "less family-friendly" nature was a selling point for the four actors who participated in the production, but that many of the film's raunchier scenes were cut for the theatrical release.

“There was a steamy kiss. It got cut. There was an actual kiss between Daphne and Velma that got cut,” Gellar said. “I feel like the world wants to see it. I don’t know where it is.”

In addition, Gellar disclosed that the theatrical release of "Scooby-Doo" omitted a remark Daphne made to Fred regarding Fred's sexual orientation.

The actress Gellar remarked, "There was a great sentence too that I'll never forget." I overheard Daphne and Fred arguing, and I said, "That ascot makes you seem homosexual!" I closed the door on him quickly. That was slashed as well. In retrospect, I believe that was my primary motivation for being involved with the film. That's what most people have been thinking for a while. Fred's possible attraction to both of them has always been assumed. It was all slashed.

After being denied permission to make Cardellini's live-action Velma clearly lesbian in "Scooby-Doo" and its 2004 sequel, "Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed," Gunn vented his frustration with the company in a 2020 Twitter thread.

“In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” Gunn wrote at the time. “But the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) and finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

For the first time, Velma was shown as a lesbian in last year's "Scooby-Doo" animated movie, "Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!," in which she is shown openly crushing on another female character named Coco Diablo. New HBO Max prequel series "Velma" also presents Velma as an LGBT character.

Cardellini stated, "Velma has been around since 1969," to Entertainment Weekly after Velma's release the year prior. Recently, I took my kid trick-or-treating, and I was pleasantly surprised to see many Velmas among the crowd. I think it's wonderful that she has a position in culture that seems to remain vibrant even after decades have passed. So many hints have been dropped about [her being a lesbian], and I think it's terrific that it's out there now.
